Mergers in Photography

A merger in photography occurs when a background object is directly in front or behind a subject. If there are multiple subjects in the photograph, a merger can also occur if both main subjects overlap with each other or touch the sides of the picture frame.

Paper Mache

This photo does a poor job at merging the girl statue with the leaves because it looks like the leaves are growing out of her head which distracts the viewer from the object they are supposed to be looking at.

Animal Farm

This photo does a better job at merging because the plants are behind the sculpture which fits the grass scenery of the farm and the barnyard animals.
